In the midst of all the work and moving Paula in, Will found himself a plane. A sweet, sky blue ’62 Cessna 150B. Will actually thought the paint job a bit precious, but the US Air Force colonel out of Incirlik Air Base who sold it to him said he’d chosen that color “because if God wasn’t a Tar Heel, then why’d he go and make the sky Carolina blue?”

The colonel was North Carolina born and bred and was headed back there upon his retirement. He had twenty-five years in and was ready to get out, though he was not many years older than Will.

“I’m looking forward to settling down and staying home,” he said. “Got myself a 150 Aerobat there to play with. Sure am happy to find this pretty girl a good home here,” he said, patting her polished flank.

Funny, Will thought. He had hit his professional stride and couldn’t imagine even thinking about retirement. As far as settling down and staying home went, well, why would he want to do that? Not that he even knew where he’d call home. There was no place that he felt like the colonel obviously did about the Tar Heel State. He’d gotten picked up and moved so many times as a kid and then done the same to himself and his family. The world at large was home, no settling needed.

Speaking of home, he found one for Blue, as he’d come to think of the plane, at the Elazığ airfield. Then he waited for a work and weather window.
